ISSUE 1: RECOGNITION & RESPONSE

the need to recognise, respond and adapt to cultural diversity issues in a complex management context

OUR EXPERIENCE
Specific challenges include:
- Building awareness of the practical implications of cultural difference in day-to-day contacts with international partners
- Understanding differences in decision-making, communication and feedback styles
- Distinguishing between national, organisational, functional factors in resolving problems
- Developing the international cadres of the future
- Preparing individuals for a new international role

ONE CLIENT'S CHALLENGE
As a large international consumer product business, we send high potential managers to unfamiliar local markets to gain the understanding required to judge whether and how to launch particular products in those countries. If we make the wrong decision, we lose market share. How can we prepare these individuals so that they make the right observations and bring the right knowledge back?

THE TCO RESPONSE
We designed a three-stage modular programme entitled Leading through Cultural Diversity which managers undertake in the four months before their departure for a new market. This looks at adaptations in leadership style from an individual, team and organisational perspective. It uses a 'blended learning' approach involving a mix of group workshops - one 3-day, two 2-day - personal skills coaching, using psychometrics, and distance learning, between workshops. It helps participants first to gain awareness and then develop skills in leading across cultures. The programme highlights core generic concepts of cultural diversity as well as including specific sessions on relevant areas of the world.
